Cupping Massage

What is it Cupping?

Cupping Massage is a treatment that uses specially designed cups to create gentle suction on the skin and underlying tissues. Cupping has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese, Egyptian and Middle Eastern medicine and is now offered as a complementary therapy in many massage and wellness settings.

At YOU Massage, Cupping is offered alongside Deep Tissue Massage, allowing your therapist to combine the two techniques when appropriate. The cups create a lifting sensation on the skin and superficial tissues, which can help to increase local circulation and create a different type of stimulation from traditional hands-on massage.

Depending on your needs, your therapist may use the cups on specific areas of muscular tension before or alongside massage techniques. Your treatment will be adapted to your body, the areas you’re experiencing tension in and how you respond to the treatment.

Cupping can be particularly appealing if you’re looking for an alternative approach to working on tight, overworked or tense muscles.

Benefits of Cupping

People choose Cupping for a variety of reasons, particularly when they’re experiencing muscular tension or discomfort.

It may help to:

  • Relieve feelings of muscular tension and tightness
  • Support local circulation
  • Encourage relaxation
  • Ease areas of muscular discomfort
  • Complement hands-on massage techniques
  • Provide a different approach to working with areas of persistent tension

Everyone responds differently to Cupping, and your therapist will discuss what you’re hoping to achieve from your treatment before getting started.

When is Not Recomended

Cupping isn’t suitable for everyone, so it’s important to tell your therapist about any relevant health conditions or medication before your treatment.

Cupping may not be appropriate if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, take blood-thinning medication, have fragile, irritated or broken skin, have an active skin condition in the area being treated, or have recently had surgery or an injury in the treatment area.

If you have eczema, psoriasis or another skin condition, please speak to your therapist before booking, as the suction may irritate affected areas.

If you have a serious medical condition or are unsure whether complementary therapy is appropriate for you, please speak to your doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.

What to Expect from your Treatment

Your treatment will begin with a short consultation, where your therapist will ask about your health, any areas of discomfort and what you’d like to get from the session.

Your therapist will then position the cups on selected areas of the body. The cups create suction, gently drawing the skin and superficial tissues upwards.

You may feel a pulling, warming or tight sensation as the cups are applied. Your therapist will monitor how you’re responding and adjust the treatment as necessary.

Cupping can sometimes leave temporary circular marks, redness or bruising on the skin. These are a normal result of the suction and usually fade gradually over the following days.

Your therapist may combine Cupping with Deep Tissue or other massage techniques, depending on your individual needs.

If anything feels uncomfortable during your treatment, let your therapist know so they can adjust the pressure or technique.
