Bamboo Massage

What is it Bamboo Massage?

Bamboo Massage is a specialised massage technique that uses smooth bamboo sticks alongside traditional hands-on massage to work on areas of persistent muscular tension.

The bamboo tools allow your therapist to apply focused pressure across larger areas of the body, making the technique particularly useful for areas where tension feels deep, stubborn or difficult to release with hands alone.

Your therapist will first warm the muscles using hands-on techniques before introducing the bamboo sticks. The sticks can then be rolled and worked over the soft tissues, following areas of tension and the body’s natural lines of movement.

Although Bamboo Massage has become increasingly popular in Western spas and wellness centres, bamboo has been used in traditional bodywork practices in Asia for generations.

At YOU Massage, your treatment is adapted to your individual needs, with your therapist adjusting the pressure and techniques according to your body and areas of tension.

Benefits of Bamboo Massage

Bamboo Massage can be particularly helpful when you’re experiencing larger or more stubborn areas of muscular tension.

It may help to:

  • Release areas of persistent muscular tension
  • Ease tight and overworked muscles
  • Work across larger areas of the body
  • Support mobility and freedom of movement
  • Encourage circulation to areas of muscular tension
  • Relax the body while providing a more focused treatment
  • Complement other remedial and soft tissue techniques

Because the bamboo tools allow your therapist to work efficiently across larger areas, Bamboo Massage can be a great option if you enjoy a firmer, more focused massage but want to experience something different from a traditional Deep Tissue treatment.

When is Not Recomended

Bamboo Massage uses firm, focused pressure, so it isn’t suitable for everyone.

Please speak to us before booking if you have a significant medical condition, a recent injury, or any concerns about whether this type of massage is appropriate for you.

Bamboo Massage may not be suitable if you have conditions such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory spinal conditions, severe respiratory disorders, cerebral palsy, diabetes, epilepsy or very high blood pressure. It may also be unsuitable following a recent injury, such as whiplash or a muscle tear, or during pregnancy.

If you’re unsure whether Bamboo Massage is right for you, contact us before booking. Your therapist can discuss your circumstances and recommend a more appropriate treatment if necessary.

Sticks & Stones: Bamboo Massage with Hot Stones

Want to take your Bamboo Massage a little further?

Our Sticks & Stones Massage combines bamboo massage with the soothing warmth of hot stones.

The warmth of the stones helps to relax and soften the muscles before your therapist introduces the bamboo techniques. This combination allows the treatment to move between deep, focused work and soothing, warming massage, creating a treatment that is both effective and deeply relaxing.

Our Sticks & Stones combination is available as a 90-minute treatment, giving your therapist plenty of time to work on areas of tension while allowing you to enjoy the relaxing qualities of hot stone massage.

What to Expect from your Treatment

Your Bamboo Massage will begin with a short consultation, particularly if it’s your first visit to YOU Massage. Your therapist will ask about your general health, areas of tension and what you’d like to get from your treatment.

You’ll then be comfortably positioned on the massage bed and your therapist will begin by warming the muscles with hands-on massage.

Once the tissues are warm, smooth bamboo sticks are introduced. Your therapist will use different sizes and techniques depending on the area being treated, rolling and gliding the bamboo across the muscles to work through areas of tension.

The pressure can feel firm, particularly around tight or stubborn areas, but your therapist will adjust it according to your comfort and needs. You should always feel able to communicate with your therapist if you’d like the pressure changed.

The treatment can leave you feeling deeply relaxed, with areas of muscular tension feeling softer and freer afterwards.
